I've been hosting an open mic
    for a year
    and I've hardly noticed it.
    I've noticed
that I have to be at a coffee shop
    every Wednesday
    and I've noticed
that I'm standing in front of people
who are ten years younger than me.
    I've noticed
that despite a substantial amount of stagetime
I don't seem to be performing much
    But a year?
That used to be a shitload of time.
    It's passed by embarrassingly quickly.

    I should state that
this is one of those opens where it
    doesn?t really matter
    who the host is?
although I'm pretty sure I hold the record
    for time spent as host.
The venue is what holds the audience,
it has a vibe with or without me.
I was there when it was 3 artist for an audience of 30
2 artists for an audience of 7
12 artists for an audience of wall-to-wall
All I do is call the names
    Make the plugs
    Encourage the coffee drinking
    Shit, man
    It has been a year?

    What was I doing before?

I like this simply cause I like poetry, I like open Mic's, and I like all sorts of performance. You're honest -which is good. I didn't really notice you on the board before, or I did and I forgot. I just now see that you're from Lowell, MA. I'm sure you don't think it's a big deal, but I kinda' think that's cool cause that's where Jack Kerouac was from. And now I see you've been hosting an open mic? (not that I could venture that far for the event) - Tell me about it. I like to here all sorts of news about poetry in the makings, goings, the whos and whats of who and what are going on. Also - another thing - are you planning on attending the Lowell Celebrates Jack Kerouac thingy this year... I think there's one this year. Not sure. reply on the thread here - if you please.

i think this is/was too plain for me...no spice or action for me...yes, I could get pictures and images, but no I could not get the feel....sorry...maybe you could turn it into a little prose...with actions and descriptions....

Thread K., A poet and a philosopher? Nice to see you on these boards as well as in Gen. Phil. This poem was pretty well written I felt. Some of it seemed a little chunky, however it flowed quite nicely. I was able to keep track of what was going on, not that that is hugely important but it's nice to be able to once in a while. This I enjoyed reading.

The Kerouacs Fest once again falls on Columbus Day weekend. Here's their current web address: http://lckorg.tripod.com

The open I host is at a small coffee shop called The Sugar Shack. If you've ever been to the festival this is the venue where they have the open jam with David Amram. It's on Wednesday and now that school's back in session the attendance is up.

As far as the actual piece goes: yeah, I probably didn't need to break it up into lines. Seems like it has that damned William Shatner school of poetry look to it. I do use more metaphors and examples when I speak so I can't really say "I write this way because I speak this way." But when I'm writing those seem even more forced than line breaks.
